Levi The Poet

Levi The Poet

Levi is a poet, a man of many words. As a verbal processor myself, I can appreciate this. His passion shines through in live performance. For the last several years he’s toured hard and heavy spouting poems of personal experience and theological insights. It’s inspiring stuff.

Levi The Poet was the kind of artist that got all up in your business and sweated on his audience (sound familiar?) but he recently shifted to performing in front of a projection screen. These new poems are his best yet. They resonated with the darkness we can all identify. As fictional works that tell a story, I believe they will identify even better. They are definitely a step in the right direction.

Levi will be contributing a poem to the Nate Allen Kickstarter Mixtape.

Levi’s upcoming concept album Correspondence-(A Fiction) will be out in November.

McDougall

McDougall

McDougall is a foot stomping, bluegrass hustling one-man-band based in Portland, Oregon. Scott’s music has elements of folk, gospel, bluegrass, blues, and always a good amount of rock n’ roll. His live show is not to be missed and each record he makes takes a huge step-forward. Distinctively intense vocals also characterize this creative take on traditional Americana.

I like to say Scott McDougall is our rock n’ roll priest because the first 2 times I met him were on significant days in my life. We played shows together the night Tessa and I got engaged and the day we buried my Grandfather.

McDougall is contributing “Ones and Twos” to the Nate Allen Kickstarter Mixtape.

Octagrape

Octagrape! OctaGRAPE! OCTAGRAPE!

I saw them once and I can’t get them out of my head.. seriously so rad. They are the sonic completion of the best 90’s garage rock band time warped to save the world in 2014.  Glen Galloway has a long history of making great music in Truman’s Waters and Soul Junk.

We’ve done shows with Soul Junk, but nothing could have prepared me for the joyful, distorted mess that was and is Octagrape. The thing is, Glen moves around a lot and he doesn’t wear a guitar strap. The frenetic energy released on stage is palpable. These guys are professionals. Octagrape combines life-lessons-learned from countless nights spent in dirty rock clubs to teach us all a lesson: play rock n’ roll like you mean it and remember to have fun because at any given moment things might spin a out of control and you want to be able to say “I was there when….”

Von Strantz

Von Strantz

Step right up and jump right in… Von Strantz is about to begin… What you thought was a show might just be therapy! Like letting go at the top of the slide, by the time this ride is over you’ll be glad you took the chance.

Folk n’ Rollers Von Strantz play music built for connecting and building community, but before you dismiss Von Strantz as just another folky duo make sure you look them in the eyes, because in just one look you will know the rock n’ roll fire is strong in these ones.

i really can’t say it better than they do, so according to their bio:

“Utilizing a variety of instruments such as the mandolin, violin, bass, and cello, Von Strantz unites harmonies strung together by commanding and soulful lyrics. With story-sharing as their passion, Von Strantz invites their audience into the emotion of each piece. Von Strantz is storytellers, an ebb and flow of two different musicians, exploring the dark and emerging with hope.”

Von Strantz will be contributing a song to the Nate Allen Kickstarter Mixtape.

Von Strantz will be joining Nate Allen & The Pac-Away Dots for the Take Out The Trash album release show Sept. 16th in Kansas City.

Dead Ven

Dead Ven

If you dig punk rock inspired acoustic music then check out Dead Ven. With a celtic punk sound and activist roots, I would recommend Dead Ven’s street folk to anyone who really loves the working class ethics of The Clash or resistance of Crass.

Dead Ven has become a Kansas City staple, but Ven Smith (band namesake and lead vocalist) has deep West Coast roots that shine through in progressive ways. The band’s most recent release was a split with Kevin Seconds (of 7 Seconds) for the Money Wolf Music Collective. Dead Ven is the perfect band to check out after a long day of work when you just want to throw back a pint of Boulevard Beer (Dead Ven has a Boulevard brewing themed song!) and sing-a-long to some good old fashion celtic inspired anthems.

Dead Ven will be contributing a song to Nate Allen’s Kickstarter Mixtape.

Lauryn Peacock

Lauryn Peacock

Lauryn Peacock’s piano pop is compelling and unconventional. Her East Coast, fast paced roots spill out of her music in colorful and interesting ways. As I listen to her album Keep It Simple Let The Sun Come Out (co-produced by Daniel Smith of Danielson), I picture a Wes Anderson movie with actors dancing in the sunrise after a crazy night they somehow just survived. There is much to digest within her songs and they’re just top notch. If Joni Mitchell were young and making music today it might sound a little bit like Lauryn Peacock.

Lauryn is going on a short tour starting this Friday. If she comes through your town be sure to check it out. She might even have her own Zany Zine of poetry and art to share with you. Show details are at the bottom of this blog.

Joseph Camugia

Joseph Camuglia

Joseph Camuglia is a troubadour from Lexingtion, KY. His songs remind me of a mix of Arlo Guthrie, Bob Dylan and Larry Norman. Joseph’s been writing 100’s of songs for many years and truly knows a great melody when it springs on him. If you like story songs, well, you may just fall in love. Some songs are serious and some are utterly ridiculous, but Joseph’s smooth voice and catchy choruses will rope you in until you find yourself humming them indefinitely.

In the 80’s “Pizza Joe” wrote an ode to Food Not Bombs, which at least in my mind should be the anthem for the anti-bomb, poverty fighting movement. Warning: This song is memorable, as are most of Joseph Camuglia’s songs. Tessa first heard “Let’s Make Pizza” in a friend’s living room jam session in Chicago. This group of friends said they had learned the song at a music festival when some random guy wandered by their campsite and sang it to them. Fast forward 10 years later, Tessa is thousands of miles away in Portland, OR at a house show that melts into an open mic. A random guy is there, and he plays the pizza song. Tessa runs into the living room exclaiming, “You’re that guy! I heard your song once 10 years ago and here you are! Who are you?”

Who is Joseph Camuglia indeed? A really nice guy with a penchant for adventure and imagination.

Angus McKinney

Angus McKinney

Angus McKinney, a.k.a. Joel Kircher, is a singer/songwriter/rock n’ roller based in New York State. His songs are hard fought and pain forged. This is music anyone can enjoy, especially if you have learned to value life through hard times. Angus McKinney has carefully collected 30 years of music influences and distilled it into one of the best albums I have heard in some time. Two things you will notice about Angus McKinney is that his voice is deep and his lyrics are direct.

He recently finished his first proper album, Never Forgotten, which was produced by Jesse Sprinkle. I am listening to it now and it’s bringing a huge smile to my face. Never Forgotten is an album about relationships, loss, faith and love. It is beyond fantastic and well worth the wait for an artist far more people should know about. My first time ever playing guitar publicly I opened for Joel and we have played shows when possible since then. Please listen to his record below.

Joel sent me some words about his album and I think you need to read them:

“The album is entitled Never Forgotten… after the painting that I used for the front cover. It was painted by Lynnsy Deferio as a memorial for the three babies that she lost to miscarriage. Monika and I also lost three babies during that time, which was when the bulk of this album was written.”

Garret Potter

Garret Potter

Garret Potter is a spoken word artist and performance poet. His gentle softness and ability to articulate emotion make him compelling and easy to listen to. He is a man who cares and feels deeply for people and the planet. He longs to make a difference in this world and love people well.

When I was finishing school and working on my Destroy Nate Allen songbook, Garret was in the same library, working on his first book HIDE AND SEEK: A Poet’s Memoir. Not only did he teach me how to play speed scrabble, but I learned a lot from seeing Garret’s writing process. Not so long ago, Garret moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan from Portland, Oregon and helped resurrect Ann Arbor’s poetry slam team, which recently went to Nationals.

I have rarely met a more genuine person that Garrett Potter and I am honored to call him a friend.

Garret Potter’s poem “Spray Bottle” will be featured on Nate Allen’s Kickstarter Mixtape. This playlist includes over 30 artists and is included with any pledge amount. Order by 10:59pm CST on Wednesday Nov 5.

Nathan Leigh

Nathan Leigh

Theatrical, political, vulnerable, enjoyable, sing-a-long-able.

Armed with an acoustic guitar, kind smile and a quick wit, Nathan Leigh is all these and more. He has a great story of walking arm-in-arm with Arlo Gutherie once and that seems fitting. Nathan Leigh’s highly enjoyable acoustic folk rock fits equally well at protests and coffee shops.

I met Nathan when we were double-booked to play the same show in Jacksonville, Florida. Apparently the promoter got our emails confused and thought were both the same “Nate” and confirmed us both. It was the kind of comical night friendships are forged in.

Nathan Leigh will be contributing his song “Never Be Normal” to Nate Allen’s Kickstarter Mixtape. This playlist includes over 30 artists and is included with any pledge amount. Order by 10:59pm CST on Wednesday Nov 5.
